Soul and Shadow: Scarlette<center><b>Downfall</b></center>
"Please! Don't do it! You don't wanna do this!"
Scarlette stands over him, gun pointing right at his heart. The man on the floor, looking up at her and all beat up, can barely keep an eye open, blood coming down from his head.
"Shut the F... Just shut up!"
"Please, girl! I don't even know you, please!"
[[Next|Scarlette Thinks]](link: ""CLICK!"")[The trigger is pulled but there is only a (link: ""CLICK."")["CLICK."
Scarlette panics, and realizes that in her hurry she hadn't paid attention to how many bullets she had placed inside the barrel. There were only a few, which left some holes empty in the barrel.
She wonders if the gun not firing is some sort of divine sign, perhaps she's not really supposed to kill this man, despite the evil stuff he did.
(link: "Next")[But as she starts wondering if perhaps she should let the authorities take care of this, she remembers the vow of revenge she made against his mother's killer. And here he is.
(link: "Next")[So she thinks hard, tries to see what consequence is more bearable to live with: letting the authorities "handle" everything, and possibly cut a deal and let him on the loose, or taking matters in her hands and finalizing this ordeal -- by killing him.
Scarlette looks at the man, straight to his eyes, and then lowers her gaze down to the gun. She then

]]]]"I can't do it," Scarlette says to herself.
(link: "Next")[All the emotions she had built up, all that anger and hatred, that wish for revenge... They all seemed like a mountain far too steep to be climbed. They were up there at the top, like unnatainable ideals.
The man on the floor is still frozen in fear. He has a glimmer of hope in his eyes, but fear has the greater hold of him.
He sees her hesitate, and part of him is relieved.
(link: "But not for long.")[But not for long.
He feels coldness all around him, like someone had suddenly lowered the AC. He also thinks he saw a shadow move right behind him. He turns his head and glances around the room, everything looks the same. He listens for movement, but all he hears is Scarlette's heavy breathing -- and his.
(link: "Next")[Once again, he looks at Scarlette's eyes, and what he sees sends chills down his spine...
It's as though Scarlette is in some state of trance, and he can see that her eyes, her pupils, are dialated, blackness surrounding them.
[[Next|Azazel's subtle appearance]]
]]]"Put the gun up. Point it at him again. Just go ahead and do it... Don't waste your time on scum like this." Whispers a voice.
"Who's there?" She tries to say, but no sound comes out. She tries to turn around, move her head to see who said that, but she can't move. She's paralyzed, as though encompassed by the air around her. Air so thick that she feels she's suffocating.
Once again she hears that dark and mysterious voice:
"Put the gun up. Pull the trigger. Easy peasy. A loud boom. The man's spirit is free from his body. And the world is a better place."
"'The hell are you talking about? Who are you?" She again tries to speak, but her mouth doesn't move. Still, somehow, the mysterious presence answer her back:
"You know who I am. And you know what I'm talking about. It's the same thing you want, you know you ought to do this."
Scarlette's still holding the gun, processing her thoughts. On the one hand, she's sure she has what it takes to kill this man. On the other hand, she realizes that she's not completely sure.
[[Next|Azazel's Temptation]] Scarlette opens up the barrel, checks where the bullets are, without losing sight of the man.
She looks at him. Looks down at the barrel. Looks at him. Looks down, starts rotating the barrel with her thumb. Looks at him. She then sees the three bullets and closes the gun again.
(link: "Next")[The man once again pleads for his life.
"Please. I'm so sorry. I will turn myself in to the police. I promise. Just don't shoot me. I've had enough."
Scarlette stares at him. She's sure that the gun's loaded this time. Now she must decide again.

]He keeps on begging her for his life, but Scarlette seems like she's not paying attention, both dumbfounded by anger and held at bay by fear and, perhaps, a tiny thought of compassion.
After all, she's about to kill this man.
And though what he had done was beyond hineous, he had already been beaten close to death and wouldn't have a normal life after all the wounds she had inflicted him.
(link: "Next")["Nonsense," she she says to herself. "This guy killed my mother, and if I don't end this now, who knows what he'll do next. This ends tonight..."
She grabs the revolver with both hands, and she
[[pulls the trigger|Pull trigger]] [[hesitates|Don't pull trigger]]
]]"That's it, girl. Show him who's boss."
A whisper says through the darkness, as though its sound were originating from behind her.
Scarlette notes the voice, but does not want to give the man a chance to escape or fight her, so she does not turn around, her eyes fixed on the man, gun pointing at his heart again, and she wonders if maybe she just made up that voice.
"Make him beg for his life. He's in your control. That's where you wanted him to be, isn't it?"
The mysterious voice continues.
Scarlette doesn't know what's going on. Is she hallucinating?
She notices that the man is looking at her in fear, which means he did not hear any other voice.
She feels that the temperature has dropped, but she thinks it's just her own fear, until she sees that the man is not sweating anymore. Strange... The temperature has actually gone down.
The man is all the more confused. He also felt the temperature drop, but he did not hear any voices. Instead, what he sees sends even more chills down his spine:
Scarlette's eyes have turned black, and she looks like she's in some state of trance.
"Oh shit..." he thinks to himself. "This girl is high, it's my end..."
[[Next|Scarlette shoots]] Scarlette suddenly feels very (link: "cold")[cold.

Her legs start to (link: "shake")[shake.

The mysterious voice keeps taunting Scarlette. She does not respond.
She only stares at the guy.
"Hatred... I can feel your hatred," continues the voice. "I feel it like it's my own. It's your mother that he murdered. And over what? Over some filthy money. What a scoundrel..."
Scarlette tightens her grip on the gun. The temperature drops even more, or so she feels.
[[Next|Decision, Again]] "CLICK"
Blood splatters out of the man's chest.
He lays in his back.
His eyes open, in shock.
Fear in those eyes.
A little struggle, and.
He's dead. Eyes closed. Shirt covered in blood.
It's all over.

[[Go back|Table of Contents]]"Just go." She says to the man.
He's frozen in disbelief.
He's still dumbfounded. Just lays there, breathing hard.
She puts the gun away.
[[She turns around and walks away]] [[She yells at the man, telling him to leave]][[On Second Thought]] Scarlette lashes out in anger to the guy, so much so that the man gets up and starts walking away.
She feels satisfied to see him struggling to walk. Feels like that was punishment enough.
[[On Second Thought...|On Second Thought]] She watches the man struggling to walk, and how he's making a great effort to be fast.
She notices that his every muscle aches. He's soaked in blood, from so many wounds. She sees that for him every step is a torment from hell. But also his only salvation.
Instead of feeling sorry for him, she sees him as repugnant and pathetic.
"Look at how pathetic he is. Do you really want to leave this pathetic man continue living his pathetic existence? Is he really worth that much? Whispers the mysterious voice. "I mean, look at him... Besides, you shouldn't take any chances. When he's better off, he's gonna hunt you down."
Scarlette knows that there's a real possibility of this happening. And, after all, that voice is right: he looks pathetic. The very sight of him trying to get away is disgusting to her.

</center>"He's a bastard and he's made you an orphan. And do you know what? It's not the first time he's gotten away with it..." Whispers the voice.
This made Scarlette jump back in anger. How could this guy have done this horrible deed more than once and gotten away with it?
"That's right. He killed somone else's parents. And he gets away with it?" The voice continues. "I mean. Someone's ought to stop this! To stop him! And here you are..."
"Here I am."
"What?" Asks the man.
"What must I do?"
"What? Who are you talking to...?" The man is shivering in fear now.
"You know what you got to do..."
"I know what I got to do."
"What are you talking about, girl? What are you doing?" Panic has overtaken the man.
Scarlette's finger is rubbing the trigger, and she...

This is an (link:"interactive-dynamic story.")[interactive-dynamic story.
By interactive we mean that you will have choices to make in order to advance in the story.
By dynamic we mean that the story (the plot) will actually change depending on your choices.
(link:"Instructions")[The idea is that you read this as you'd read any other novel or short story. You won't have to worry about "wrong choices" or "deaths." The story will go on, and for the most part, there won't be choices that lead directly to the character's death. This is a story. Treat it as such.
The other idea, though, is that once you finish one story, you go back and try other choices, and see how the story changes (slightly or drastically) by them.
You'll find comletely different plots, or you'll find yourself in familiar areas but different endings.
This is just a demo for now. We're testing the waters, and we invite you to enjoy our adventure.
